Get the performance and parallelism of all-flash SAN combined with the elasticity, data portability and features of an enterprise NAS. Universal Storage is a next-generation distributed data store with limitless scale, born of new cloud native concepts such as Linux containers and disaggregation.

Overview

Legacy architectures weren't built for today's cloud native applications.

As container platforms such as Kubernetes have become a foundation of modern application deployment, organizations have expanded container use to power databases and other stateful applications. However, a containerized environment is only as good as the data platform it draws from. While legacy data stores are now being retrofitted to serve data via cloud native APIs, their architectures have not changed and continue to impose tradeoffs upon infrastructure that limit the ability for container platforms to scale cost-effectively and with the resilience required in today’s world of ever-growing big data.

Until VAST, container platforms have had to choose from high-performance yet inelastic options such as DAS or SAN or elastic yet slow storage options such as enterprise NAS. In all cases, no legacy solution has been designed to remedy the added expense of flash infrastructure such that it can be affordable enough for all data. The expense of legacy flash leaves organizations deploying tiered storage options that forces users to value and devalue data as it moves across tiers, complicating application performance and compute efficiency for big data and machine learning applications.

VAST made a wise decision to build an architecture that is diametrically opposite of the established systems that came before it. Instead, they wisely focused on next-generation workloads such as log analytics and deep learning. These workloads require massive scalability and high performance and are not a natural fit for legacy storage controller architectures.

Key Benefits

A cloud-native architecture to power stateful applications.

For the first time in 20 years, VAST Data has introduced a new type of distributed system architecture. VAST's Disaggregated and Shared Everything (DASE) storage system was built from the ground up to eliminate the tradeoffs imposed by legacy scale-out architectures. Our Universal Storage system was engineered to deliver the performance and I/O parallelism of SAN storage while providing the simplicity and elasticity of NAS - while making all-flash infrastructure affordable enough that you never need to think about storage tiering again.

Revolutionary Flash Economics

Deploy all-flash infrastructure for all your active data sets. VAST's new advancements in commodity flash management, data protection and reduction deliver a lower TCO than hybrid storage alternatives.

Unlimited Scale

Scale performance linearly as more CPUs are added to the system. VAST’s all-new DASE Architecture eliminates east-west traffic, avoiding the performance scaling issues that are inherent with legacy shared-nothing systems.

SAN Performance Levels Over Ethernet

Get 80x more performance over legacy approaches to NAS with NFS. With a series of VAST innovations, NFS, RDMA, and multi-pathing can now saturate all network ports in any K8S host.

Programmable Data Services

VAST’s CSI provides the APIs needed to create Persistent & Ephemeral volume claims, QoS policies, snapshots, replicate data, and choose from multiple high-performance connectivity options for Kubernetes and OpenShift clusters.

Scale Without Feature Compromise

Get near-limitless snapshots, enterprise replication, user and admin auditing, remote monitoring, online upgrades and expansions and so much more. Break the scalability & data management simplicity compromise.

A Unified, Multi-Protocol Platform

Process data to any application: data can be delivered across NFS, SMB and S3. The VAST Element Store is a universal permissions management model that arbitrates access across supported protocols.
